IK4-LORTEK was invited by MESIC 2015 organizers (UPC-BarcelonaTECH, Fundació CIM) to make a presentation of COMBILASER project within a session in which several EC funded projects in the field of Advanced Manufacturing were presented. It was held at the end of July in Barcelona, Spain.
MESIC's main objective is to offer a meeting point for professionals and researchers from industry, research centers and academia to present and discuss recent advances in the field of Manufacturing Engineering. Within this framework, COMBILASER was introduced to audience by Dr. Luka Eciolaza, Researcher of the Smart Manufacturing Department of IK4-LORTEK, who did the presentation “On the way to zero defect laser manufacturing by process self-optimization based on monitored and NDI data”. The presentation was focused in its latter part on the “Self-learning System” development, activity which is being led by Dr. George Panoutsos, lecturer of the Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering of The University of Sheffield, who collaborated in the presentation preparation. MESIC 2015 was attended by the Manufacturing Research Community, giving the opportunity to find synergies with other EC funded projects.

The first part of the meeting focused on the R&D achievements of the Centre in this period and on opportunities and plans for the future. Achievements and products that were developed by the Centre were presented by the managers of the respected BUs. Products and solutions spanned from ICE components, electric drivetrain components, safety and comfort systems, mechatronics and technologies and processes.
This was followed by a presentation of Ms. Samanta Krapež of SiEVA’s European projects acquired under the Horizon 2020. The COMBILASER project received much attention and interest from the participants. Many were interested in the possibilities of a wider application of the project’s solution since other industria SiEVA’s stakeholders also manufacture products where similar solutions might be used. SiEVA’s director-general Miloš Šturm promised to let everyone know when the validation and industrial use-case application activities under the COMBILASER project will begin.
The second part of the event focused on metrology: this scientific field has been steadily gaining prominence in the automotive R&D sector due to ever increasing quality and reliability demands. The presentations included Ines Mohorič of Hidria Rotomatika, who presented the activities of laboratories that form the Hidria Institute for Materials and Technologies and Mr. Matjaž Lindič from the Slovenian Institute for Quality and Metrology – the leading national institution in this field – who presented the latest industrial and R&D trends in metrology.
The third part of the event was designed as an open discussion. Participants discussed possible R&D ideas for future projects and also touched on possibilities on cooperating in further European R&D projects, especially under the Horizon 2020 European research framework. Once again SiEVA’s activities on this field gained much attention and many present in the audience stressed the need to transfer the acquired experience and partners’ contacts acquired in European R&D activities to possible new project ideas in order to create new promising R&D consortia with European partners.

We were kindly invited by Mr. Ulrich Thombansen (Fraunhofer-Institut für Lasertechnik) to make a presentation of COMBILASER project objectives/achievements on the event of LASER World of Photonics 2015. Some of the EC founded laser oriented projects were presented at this event, including COMBILASER.
The aim of this event was mainly networking of representatives (project coordinators, presenters, project partners) on the laser oriented projects. On the other hand, this event was also the opportunity to find some synergies with other laser oriented project in sense of potential clustering in upcoming years. The closest parallels could be done with two project: MASHLES and RADICLE.
The COMBILASER presentation was taken positively, the great and high expectations were also clearly pointed out from the moderator of Forum.
